Daniel Adam Smith is an American artist living in Vienna and working in the vernacular of orchestrated pop influenced by artists as diverse as Scott Walker and Ennio Morricone to Donovan, early Bowie and even Abba. His musical aesthetic is shaped strongly by story telling mixed with cinemascapes of lush yet surprisingly acoustic and natural sounds sung with conviction and sincerity.
He sings, plays acoustic guitar and composes with the accompaniment of Christian Selinger on Piano, Günther Castanetti on Drums & Julia Schwendinger on Cello and Bass.
Daniel came to settle in Vienna in early 2003.
“Once I arrived in Vienna, I met everyone I could in the local music industry and asked them about working together. The standard answer I got was ‘nothing happened here except Falco.’ This is what I call the Falco Syndrome. One of my band members then told me about musik vereins and this non-profit model of getting your music out seemed to be the perfect vehicle for what I wanted to do. I met a couple of other people that shared my love of live music played on instruments and this is when I created the Vienna Songwriting Association.”
Daniel had decided that the future of music is not tied to the major label model. “The future is small individuals working together with a small group, indie label, and other talented people using a DIY approach.”
Daniel signed to Buntspecht Records in the Spring of 2006, his latest album Saltwater Days will be available on 15th September, 2006.
“For as long as I breathe I will be writing my funny little songs about peoples lives, some of those stories I have lived and some of them I am just a willing spectator taking notes and trying to capture”.
